Pioneer: A Literary and Critical Magazine is first published.

(Jan.) Published by Robert Carter and James Russell Lowell, the magazine of the arts, it is published from offices at today’s 1 Boston Place (201 Washington Street. Lowell is the first editor. The first issue contains Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart.” The third – and last – contains Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Birth-Mark.”
